San Francisco: Day 1

Today was a long day. I worked a full day and then headed to the airport for my 6:30 pm flight to San Fran. I had a layover in Dallas and of course that got delayed. I finally got to San Fran about 1am which was about an hour and a half late. Chris picked me up and we headed down to the hotel at Fisherman's Wharf. We walked around for a bit but it was dead down there. Chris was sick so we got a few things at 7Eleven and then went back to the room. We stayed up talking to about 4am.

wonderland

from question of the day:

Which Alice in Wonderland character represents you best?

I believe I am most like the March Hare. He hangs out with the Mad Hatter. He isn't as crazy as the Mad Hatter but he still get's to attend the fun tea party. And he goes both ways - sometimes stirring up the madness and sometimes suggesting to change subjects when things get too crazy. He is fun but keeps balance in a group of people with different personalities.

challenge: online shopping

from twopeas:

challenge=do you shop online? if yes what are some of your favorite shopping sites and if not share some of your favorite general sites.

yes, i definately shop online. right now i usually am spending my money on music, books, travel or scrapbooking supplies. some of my favorite sites are iTunes and last.fm for digital music. amazon.com for cds and books. united airlines for my airplane tickets. and for scrapbooking supplies i buy the most from the scrap room, two peas in a bucket, and addicted to scrapbooking.

i watched this game yesterday. caught the end of it. i could not believe this goal. it was amazing. probably something i won't see live very often. the guy bounced it off his chest and then kicked it right in. couldn't believe it was so perfect.

Practicing Peek-A-BOO

getting highlights

i've only ever done anything funky to my hair once in my life. i got highlights ten years ago. i did it again today. it's totally fun! i trusted mary to do it just right. i told her i'm lazy and might not always get it touched up so she did it in a way that it could grow out if i don't keep it up. it's really cute when i make my hair all spikey - adds a ton of texture. great for summer. happy i did it even though everyone warned me not to touch my hair.

poor charlie

poor charlie lost all of his tail feather today. all except one. he is starting to fly. he flew across my office and hit the wall. so i picked him up and was putting him back on his perch. i think something on the pearch scared him and that is why he flew off in the first place. or something out the window . . . anyways, he jumped out of my hand and by instinct i closed my hand and my fingers wrapped around his tail. i pulled out all the feathers! seven out of his eight beautiful tail feathers are not gone. and i don't know if they will grow back. he is all green with some rust coloring under the tail and not that's gone. except for one lone feather.

i called the vet to see if i needed to bring him in. they said if there is not bleeding he should be okay. just watch if he eats and drinks as normal. he is doing okay. still won't go back on the perch. they said his rear end will be sore for a bit. i brought him into the sink to see if he wanted to play in the water. you can see his one lone feather left. he didn't want to play, just wanted to crawl up on my shoulder. this is normal behavior for that stinker so i think he's okay.

Hate me

oh my god, so powerful!

obsessed with web2.0

web 2.0 is the terms for the transition that the internet is currently going through. when i used to do consulting i was exposed to a bunch of different projects, many of which did personalization. and nowadays the internet culture is blowing up. when i taught classes in personalization we'd give examples of how you can be at a music website looking at cds and through personalization you'd be able to define business rules so that cds by the same artist or similar artists would be displayed on the same page trying to show the buyer other options. but we never dreamed it would get to such a user based-world. at that time we were focusing on the business to business (B2B) model.

it seems like i missed so much in the last two years while i was busy getting married, moving and getting divorced. a few years ago people used to get on line to do research, book travel, do shopping and maybe some banking. it is completely transforming and fast. the internet is becoming a place where people can establish an identity for themselves. they can partake in a wide variety of communities allowing them to express themselves and meet people. i belong to various communities for scrapbooking (twopeas), socializing (myspace), technology (java.net), movies (youtube), and photography (flickr). you can post your pictures on line to share with your friends and then they can even buy prints of them if you want. last week at lunch we got friendly with our waiter and he gave us his email address so we could become myspace friends. "are you on myspace" is becoming a popular question when meeting people - especially with the younger generation. i made two "myspace" friends on my trip to hawaii with my sister. and you can display your creativity as well. you can make goofy videos of yourself. or maybe put together a neat video for father's day of pictures of your father through the years and what he means to you. no more simply getting a hallmark card, you can now actually make a tribute and post it online for the world to see. there are tons of sites who let you do creative things with your photos, videos. and BLOGGING! it's called the blogosphere. that amazes me too. people can have a voice about anything. do other people listen? i'm not sure, but it is our human nature to observe others. there are definately sites and blogs that stand out as leaders. almost every newspaper, magazine, website and author has their own blog or series of blogs. and millions of random individuals have their own blogs as well (including me - this is one of two that I have). it's funny that someone can just post various things and thousands of people will come each day to read them. just from you guys reading my myspace blog i get about 30-50 visitors a day. there is a website called technoarti which is part a technology and part a statistics website. it tracks all the internet blogs. i check it out all the time because it fascinates me. you can see the topics that people  blog about the most in a given day or week. you can also check and compare the statics of various blogs or communities.

and there are even new ways we can get our news! of course we can still go to cnn.com and check the headlines. but there are many blog based websites where people actually make their own news. for example, a site like fark.com has members that read news from various local or national newspapers and post funny articles. the format of fark.com mostly humor so people post wild, interesting and stupid news. but it is all real news from around the world posted by random people to share with other random people.and all those random people viewing the articles have the opportunity to comment on them. it is truly interactive. many of news articles we would never learn about by watching the today show or our local nightly news. digg.com is smiilar but after a person posts an article, the other users of the site rate them (they can comment too). the articles are mostly technology articles.  if you like the story you "digg" it (by clicking a button that says "digg"). the stories with the most "diggs" show up at the top of the list. so we ourselves, as individual online users, are determining which news is most interesting to us.

the things that these technologies are doing is VERY POWERFUL. our voices are being heard. companies are making marketing decisions based on things we say or do in these online communities. the business world is changing based on things people express in online communities. when i mention communities i refer to youtube.com (videos), flickr.com (pictures), myspace.com (making friends), digg.com (news), twopeas, etc..

i love to pay attention to the B2B partnerships of all the companies. which big company buys which new little start up. i'm also fascinated in the business models of many of these sites. i spend tons of time on youtube.com watching videos people make. i have yet to understand the business model of youtube. i don't see many ads on that site. it just launched in december of 2005 and there are millions of new users each month. it grew 72 percent in the month of may alone. it looks like they will be the winner of the video sites. and one girl, brookers, who make stupid videos just got signed by carson daily to make short-length features. the first youtube celebrity. myspace.com got bought by News Corp which is a huge media company. i have no idea what their plans are because myspace is kind of an ugly, buggy site. but there is tons of potential. myspace.com has been in the news daily and youtube.com had been in the news at least weekely for the past two months. what is interesting is that myspace is so big and the users use these other technologies with myspace. for example, people post funny youtube videos they find either on their myspace blog or through a myspace bulletin that gets sent to all of the people on their myspace friends list. youtube is becoming to myspace what paypal became to ebay. and what else will come? sites hosting music play lists are availalbe. people make slide shows of their favorite pics or even from a party and list them on their myspace page. which companies will pull ahead in those industries?

what's interesting here is that these new type of websites have no direct corporate competition. for example, when amazon.com launched in the 90s it quickly became the number 1 place to order books. but pretty soon the brick and morter stores built their own websites and now they compete heavily with amazon. the issue for these new communities seems to be copyright based. people are posting photographs that they may not have taken. clips of videos that are "pirated". music that is "pirated". we will see how corporate america reacts. we already went through one round with napster being closed down. and already some companies are emailng cease and dissist letters to youtube members who post clips from tv shows or movies. will us internet users be beat down again by corporate america. or will they have learned from the napster backlash and take a different approach?

anyways, i am completely enthralled from both a business and cultural perspective. and since i work creating websites such as these, i have my ears perked up to see where this is growing to an i have my eyes open for opportunity!

ten random life updates

1) I listed my house on the market last friday. had one showing. today the housekeepers are coming to do a good cleaning and i have some carpet cleaners coming to clean the carpets (damn tristen) and my furniture. it's a SLOW market down here. the realator comes back on monday to take pictures to add to the listing.

2) i've been having fun at work. not goofing off fun, but enjoying the work i do. i'm finally in a place with this new technology that i can do things effectively and in a timely manner. i love coding websites - it's so much fun.

3) i was supposed to have my review today. since randy (my director) left a few months ago i haven't really had any management to report to. i've been flailing around abit. a report to the project lead for this project and he is no where near as organized and proactive as me so my opinion is that this project is a mess. it's been tough. my review will be directly with the CIO, my old boss Doug who i used to report to directly - he was the one who hired me. but he stopped by this morning and told me he wanted to reschedule and we'll do it over the phone. this makes me feel somewhat neglected. each employee should get the opportunity to meet face to face and have a good conversation at their yearly review. and besides, he has no idea of the day to day stuff going on. oh well, it's a bit disappointing with how things are going around here.

4) the managers had meeting this week to discuss the new structure of the I/T department. this will change who i report to and all sorts of other things. they don't announce it until december but the rumors are flying around. and what i'm hearing doesn't make sense and doesn't seem to be good for me in the long-term.

5) charlie bird is driving me crazy. he discovered peek-a-boo a few weeks ago and that's all he'll say now. like he forgot everything else. just wants me to play peek-a-boo all the time. it's kind of fun because i'll cover the dogs eyes with my hands and then when i move my hand he yells "peek-a-boo". i'm going to try and get it on video to share with you guys. oh, and he's flying now. when i got him last september his wings were clipped so severly that it has taken until now for them to grow out. i almost shit when he flew completely across the room! can be dangerous with the dogs around.

6) i'm getting excited to see everyone. i leave next friday for san francisco to visit a friend. i'll be there friday through wednesday. then in the same week i am going to chicago. i'll be in chicago thursday through sunday. it will be a fun double-vacation.

7) i'm getting obsessed with web2.0. this is the terms for the transition that the internet is currently going through. will post a separate blog on this later.

8) yesterday i got a pedicure and have little flowers painted on my big toes. (will try to post picture later.)

9) I'm getting highlights on saturday. just little ones so no one freak out. i'm not going to ruin my "beautiful" hair. but should be a fun change.

10) i'm slacking on my movie watching. i love to watch movies because they distract me for a couple of hours and i always end up relaxed. i did watch one last night but i'm way behind on my netflix stuff. movies are coming out on HBO that I have on my netflix list! I feel so behind :)

to: god - from: the dog

Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?

Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?

Dear God: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so hard to rename the "Chrysler Eagle" the " Chrysler Beagle"?

Dear God: If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?

Dear God: We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?

Dear God: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.

Dear God: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?

Dear God: Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to be a good dog.

1 . I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.

2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.

3. The Litter Box is not a cookie jar.

4. The sofa is not a 'face towel'.
5. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.

6. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.

7. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying "hello".

8. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee table .

9. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house - not after.

10. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.

11. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch.

12. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.

P.S. Dear God: When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles back?

my day at work

work was really busy today. i was totally in the swing of things. coding away in the morning. there was supposed to be a training class but they cancelled it last minute. it was too late for them to cancel lunch so we all got free lunches from honey baked ham. perfect since i forgot mine again. i made alot of progress synching up my sandbox with the files on dev. one of our developers left last week and he is now in india for the next five weeks. he forgot to check in his code so i spent the morning trying to find the missing files and get them checked in. we had a couple of meetings in the afternoon. we went through our kick off for the test plan for our project. it was a productive day, even though the server kept timing out on me in the late afternoon.

father's day

Linda invited me to spend father's day with her and Cuff. I met over at her place around 10:30 and Cuff made us some killer bloddy mary's. we then went over to Jackson's for brunch. Our reservations were at 11:30. We got to sit right by the water and we all ate our fill. they had everything from sushi, custom omelettes, mahi mahi, cheese blintzes and anything else you can think of. they also had a great dessert table with some really good bread pudding - which i filled up on.

charlotte amalie, st. thomas ~ u.s. virgin islands

on our cruise we spent a day in charlotte amalie, st. thomas. our excursion took us over to blackbeard's castle. they had bronze statues of various pirates. the detail was amazing. there were also three houses in the "castle" and we got to see what life was like living there during pirate times. there was a little cafe / gift shop where we got rum punch. down the hill from blackbeard's castle was lots of shopping. i went a bit crazy and bought alot of great pieces. they were designer and not only hard to find in the united states, but they cost much less and there was no tax. after shopping margie and i ate lunch and then met back to go to our next spot. we drove around the island, stopping at a few scenic spots to tak pictures. then we headed to magen's bay which is one of the top beaches in the world. we spent about two hours there. it was the first beach we hit on our trip and it was definately one of the best.

this layout took me a really long time to make. i stitched all the photos with blue thread (not sure if you can see it in the picture) and it adds some nice definition between the photos. i used the little circles on the paper to write all the places we visited that day.

ruby tuesday

julie and i went to lunch at the new ruby tuesday restaurant that opened recently. they have awesome burgers and the salad bar looks great. we met a new friend too.

question of the day: summer plans

from question of the day:

Do you have any plans this summer? Are you taking a vacation? Reading through that stack of books on your nightstand?

I don't have too many big plans this summer. I have one good week coming up. I have a weekend trip planned to San Francisco over the 4th of July. Haven't been there in several years. The following weekend I'm going to visit my family in Chicago. So after that, it's nose to the grindstone. I may be able to squeeze in one more weekend away in August. I have a big project at work that launches October 1st so we will be very, very busy. This is good for me because I'm working on new technology and am getting more up to speed and becoming more marketable. I'm also selling my house and will be moving. Not sure on the timing of all that but it may be this summer as well depending on how soon I get a buyer.

challenge: dream job

from twopeas

Challenge:

Your dream job.
What is it?
Why do you wanna do this so bad?
Are you living your dream job now? if not, why not?

What steps are you taking to really DO your dream job? if any?

Share all about your dream job.

I go back and forth between being a marine biologist (to work with animals in the aquarium), a zoologist (to set up exhibits at the zoos and work with the animals) and a museum curator. Today I'm feeling historical and will pick the museum curator as my dream job.

I'd really like to be a curator because I would get to learn about a new topic and use my creativity to help design the exhibit. Back in Chicago I used to go to the lectures of all the traveling exhibits that came to the Field Museum and I would love to hear the curators talk about how they would assemble the exhibit. It was interesting how they could make an exhibit about Albert Einstein for example. His theories were so complex and they had to find creative and interactive ways of explaining his theories in a way that normal people could understand and also have interactive displays for children to be interested in or to demonstrate things. Of course I love historical displays like the treasures of the Russian Czars, Cleopatra or something like that too. So thoughout the years I'd get to nourish my interest in culture and history and also apply my creativity.

I'm not taking any steps towards pursuing this dream job. Right now I work developing websites and I like that as well.

testing

we finished our cycle two testing for SAP today. this completed the testing of the SAP integration with the extranet. we were successfully able to create orders, contracts, shipments of various types and generate the iDocs, PDFs and get the data into our database. we also came up with a huge list of things for us to do now on our integration testing side in july. so it will be a very busy couple of months.

a father's day top ten { animal fathers }

By Susan Goodman

Lessons from America's animal kingdom in how to be a superdad

TRUST EVOLUTION TO give the males of many species an excuse not to stick around and help with the kids. "Life's overriding goal is to get your genes out there with a minimum amount of invested energy and time," explains Les Kaufman, an evolutionary ecologist at Boston University's Marine Program. "The female's role usually forces her to put much more time into the parenting process. So she's choosier selecting a mate to avoid wasting this time and energy. The male uses less energy but also has less control over whether his genes make it into the next generation. So he hedges his bets by mating as much as possible." It only follows that the males of many species have adopted a "love 'em and leave 'em" strategy. But some animal fathers have taken other paths--shaped by such factors as severe living conditions that require effort from both parents for the young to survive. Or unusual reproductive techniques like external fertilization (used by fish) that leave males the last ones present--and therefore stuck with the parenting duties. No matter the reason, various animal dads are out there plugging away and raising their young. Here's a Fathers Day recognition of 10 of our national best (unscientifically chosen, with admittedly human criteria)--as well as one winner of the worst-dad category.

1. BEST TOUGH-LOVE DAD

Red fox.

Photo: Charles G. Summers, Jr.

Long before the male red fox's love gets tough, he is an attentive, indulgent mate and father. For the first month after the birth of his young, his vixen must stay in her den, doubling as a food source and thermal blanket for their young. Dad's job is providing her with food every four to six hours until she can leave the den and start hunting as well. Researchers have seen fox dads exhibiting much excitement about their pups, playing with them endlessly. One father was even observed waiting for a watchful aunt to fall asleep and then quietly calling to his pups to come play with him. After three months, it's time for life's first harsh lesson: no more free meals. "Through years of observation, I've come to believe parents start reducing food as a tactic to get the pups moving away from the den," says David Henry, ecologist for the Canadian National Parks. "And it's the father that takes the lead with this strategy." Fox fathers don't just leave their young hungry, however, they help teach survival skills. They bury surplus food close to the den and disguise it with leaves and twigs. This technique, says Henry, teaches the pups to sniff and forage. Biologist Shelly Pruss (one of Henry's students) studied the closely related swift fox in a region where they were being killed by coyotes. There, she saw a male fox playing ambush with his offspring as if teaching them how to escape from predators.

2. BEST AMPHIBIAN DAD

Barking frog.

Photo: R. D. Bartlett

Truthfully, there is not much competition. The male barking frog in the U.S. Southwest is the only North American frog known to pitch in with parenting. His contribution? He stays near the eggs until they're hatched, wetting them down with urine when they begin to dry out.

3. MOST THOROUGHLY MODERN DAD

Wilson's phalarope.

Photo: Chuck Gordon

The phalarope takes role reversal to extremes. The male makes the nest, incubates the eggs and cares for the young. His breeding plumage is also less colorful than his mate's, almost unheard of in the avian world. In this country, northern and red-necked phalaropes nest in Alaskan tundra, and Wilson's phalaropes nest in inland marshes in the West.

4. MOST MULTIDAD HOUSEHOLD

Northern jacana.

Photo: Greg R. Homel

While a female jacana guards her territory from predators, her harem bustles with more domestic tasks: As many as four male counterparts are each building their nests and rearing their individual clutch of eggs. Usually found south of the U.S. border, these long-legged and long-toed wading birds sometimes range into Texas.

5. BEST FEMALE-IMPERSONATING DAD

Lined seahorse.

Photo: Herb Segars

The male seahorse doesn't have a real pregnancy (because in human terms, at least, then he would be a she), but it comes pretty close. In fact, according to evolutionary ecologist Sara Lewis at Tufts University, "Seahorses
are the champions of paternal care. They are one of the few animals where the males are morphologically specialized to take care of the young." Talk about role reversal. After an elaborate courtship that includes sunrise swims along the ocean floor, the female inserts a tube inside the male's brood pouch and "impregnates" him with eggs. While she swims off, the male knocks his body against a plant or rock to settle the now fertilized eggs in his pouch. Researchers speculate the lining of the male's pouch may function much like a mammal's placenta, helping supply nutrients and oxygen to the young. As these embryos grow (for 10 to 30 days depending upon the species), the male seahorse's belly swells great with child (actually, 10 to 300 offspring, depending upon the species). Come time for delivery, the seahorse doubles up to squeeze his swollen abdomen and pop out progeny. The process can take hours as the young spring free and clumsily swim to hook themselves on nearby grasses. The male will then go back to the same partner later that day to mate again. Seahorses can be found in all of the nation's shallow coastal waters.

6. DAD WITH THE BEST DIETING PLAN

Gafftopsail catfish.

The male sea catfish's mouth is his nursery, as he swims around with jaws full of eggs the size of marbles, which he picks up shortly after the female lays them. This strategy precludes eating, so he lives off body fat for the month it takes the eggs to hatch and also for the two or three weeks his young need to grow into independence. Sea catfish inhabit temperate coastal and brackish waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico and southern Florida.

7. MOST MISUNDERSTOOD DAD

Giant water bug.

Photo: Edward S. Ross

While paternal care goes against the norm in the insect world, it also went against the grain of Florence W. Slater, the Victorian scientist who discovered that the male giant water bug shouldered his species' parenting burden: "That the male chafes under the burden is unmistakable," she wrote. "In fact, my suspicions as to the sex of the egg-carrier were first aroused by watching one . . . trying to free itself from its load of eggs." Slater's prejudice led her to misinterpret the behavior of the most conscientious bug dad, whose parenting stint begins with an elaborate courtship dance. "Unlike males in many other species, he tends to be more coy and cautious, and the female more aggressive," notes Randy Morgan, headkeeper of the Insectarium at the Cincinnati Zoo. Once they've mated, the female essentially glues her eggs on the male's back. "He'll be expending a lot of energy during this parenting process," says Morgan. "So after she lays some eggs, he insists they mate again to ensure his paternity." After he's loaded up with 150 or more eggs, the male water bug is totally responsible for them. He strokes the eggs-- not, as Slater thought, to dislodge them but to clean them. He executes a sort of deep knee bend to aerate the eggs. He sometimes sits at the water surface to dry them off and get rid of parasites. Mostly, however, "he takes advantage of having his eggs mounted on a mobile unit and moves around to escape predators," says Morgan. Observant naturalists in the southwestern United States and Florida can see these behaviors in and near moving water at higher elevations. Within a few weeks, the eggs triple in size. Right before they hatch, the male stops eating to avoid consuming his offspring. Once his young hatch and scatter, the male ends his parenting session by kicking the egg pads off his back--this session anyway. He can have three more clutches before breeding season is over.

8. MOST SELF-SACRIFICING DAD

Pacific spiny lumpsucker.

When the tide's in, the lumpsucker (a stout-bodied, tadpole-shaped fish found in our northern coastal waters) isn't much different from other fish dads that aerate their eggs by fanning them with fins or tail. When the tide recedes, however, the lumpsucker goes the extra mile by staying put. He remains with his eggs by attaching himself to the rocks with a sucker formed from his pelvic fins, a kamikaze move exposing him to hungry gulls and crows.

9. HARDEST WORKING DAD

Great horned owl

Photo: E. R. Degginger

He starts by establishing his territory and attracting a mate with his "three or five hooter" call. Then, since his own species has no architects or builders, both partners must go househunting for places like old squirrel nests, hawk nests or hollowed-out tree stumps. "I've even seen an owl take over a red-tailed hawk's nest," says ornithologist Richard J. Clark at York College of Pennsylvania. In late winter, the female lays her two or three eggs and the male's marathon begins. While she keeps those eggs from freezing, he brings home the bacon (or, in the owl's case, rats, mice, squirrels--and even prey as large as pheasants). In most bird species, says Clark, the female is the smaller animal, but not birds of prey. So the male great horned owl must feed himself and another adult about 25 percent larger than he. With two or three hatchlings crying for food, his burden multiplies, especially since the mother is caring for owlets that can't maintain their own body temperature for the first days or weeks of life. After about a month, however, she starts to help hunt. It's a good thing too; the fledglings will grow bigger than their parents and require as much as one-fourth their body weight in daily food intake.

10. BEST BACHELOR-PAD DAD

Threespine stickleback.

Photo: Tom McHugh

In spring, the male threespined stickleback gets domestic; but to become a homebody, he must build a home. Using twigs, plant debris and mucus as mortar, the resident of northern U.S. waters and the eastern North Pacific meticulously constructs bower-like nests. "It's wonderful to watch," says Boston University's Les Kaufman. "He backs up and stares at the nest like an artist, then swims over to make adjustments. He'll add a stick or two, spitting water to move them into place." Once satisfied with his creation, the stickleback turns to finding a mate. Advertising availability with a bright red belly and blue-green on his tail, he approaches a female and vibrates to signal his interest. To capture hers, he shows off his prime real estate. The process continues until a female enters his nest to lay eggs. Her role done, the male chases her out and swims through the nest to fertilize what she has left behind. Then he may add to his brood by repeating the process with other females. "Everybody's out for themselves here, working to pass their genes on," says Kaufman. "Females eat the eggs of their competitors. And a male eats eggs if he didn't end up liking the female who laid them. Or if he gets too hungry." Once he moves on to guarding his nest, the stickleback is a protective dad. He fans oxygen-filled water to the eggs with his fins. He removes eggs infected with fungus. He defends his young fry, which remain in the nest for a few days to feed on their still-attached yolk. And he gathers wanderers in his mouth and spits them back into their nursery until they're ready to be off on their own.

11. WORST DAD

Grizzly bear.

Deadbeat dads who desert their young are bad enough, but the grizzly bear actually kills cubs. To be fair, the grizzly is an equal-opportunity assassin. He goes after any cubs in his home range, an area as big as 1,200 square miles, where a half dozen females could be rearing young. "There's a good chance he's killing his own offspring," says biologist Harry Reynolds of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Fairbanks. A murderous male doesn't find it easy to get past mother bears, however--despite the fact that he is likely two or three times bigger than they are. Females with cubs are ferociously protective, and the more aggressive the female, the more likely she'll succeed in protecting her young. "This characteristic has obvious evolutionary advantages and may in part explain the species `personality' traits," adds Reynolds. Killing progeny seems counterproductive, evolutionarily speaking, so why does the grizzly practice infanticide? According to biologist Vic Barnes at Alaska's Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, murderous males may be regulating the size of the bear population. Since females can have litters of mixed paternity, another theory suggests a male kills cubs so a female will come back into estrus and he can impregnate her again to better ensure passing on his genes. To Reynolds, neither theory seems conclusive. "Here's one thing we do know," he says. "Bears are successful because they are opportunists, eating anything from grasses to whale carcasses. If that food source is occasionally another bear, I doubt they stop to think about it."

testing . . . 1, 2, 3

it's 4:30 and we just decided to start on our third test for the day. we are testing by creating new customers, orders, contracts and shipments in SAP and then going through all the touch points until it gets in our database for the extranet customer website. So far test 1 had 18 steps and test 2 had 19 tests. The one we are starting now has 90 STEPS!!! we are starting tonight and know we won't finish. but i've been here since 8am and will probably be here until about 10pm - at least. then we'll finish up on friday and go into saturday if we need to. things are going so slow and it's so monotonous.

my job is to help answer questions about all the business rules that the SAP team forgot about and verify data shows up in the database. it's only like 20% of what needs to be done. otherwise, I'm just watching. the SAP interface is so complex I have had an official migrane the size of China since about 2pm.

fucking frogs

there's a frog in my house! with all this damn rain they are all over the place. and it's their mating season too. this one was a tree frog - his feet are stickier than other kinds of frogs. he was on my wall. so of course i had to snap a picture before catching him. he was up kind of high and i had to get on my tippy toes to reach. i thought i could just gently put him in my hands like other frogs, but he was a leaper. he landed on my shoulder and he was all slimy. when i tried to get him off he leaped up and kind of got himself behind my ear and was hanging on my hair. eeewwww. he was so slimy. then i knocked him off of me - of course the dogs are going crazy during all of this and i was trying to catch him and keep the dogs away. tristen loves frogs. then he was on my door for a while. then he leaped over to my puple wall and was scaling up it so fast. i finally caught him and he leaped around some more. i opened the door and tried to get him out. i think they hang out on my door or on the wreath on my door and then get in when i have the door open to take out the garbage or get the mail. there are two dead frogs smushed on the side of my door. as if they were handing out there and then when i closed the door they got smushed.

presents . . .

my friend matthew brought me this back from India. he is a consultant who has been working on our current project since about january. he went back to see his family and was gone for four weeks. today was his first day back at work. it is a figure of a dancer representing the state he is from in India. it's SOOOOO cool! the first thing in my house that actually came from India instead of Pier 1 imports or something like that. now, to find the perfect place for it . . .

good morning alberto

well, the rainy season has officially started. we have our first tropical storm, alberto. they don't think it's going to be a hurricane. but we are under flood watches and there are some tornado watches out there too. it's been raining since i woke up. and not light rain, really heavy rain. streets are flooding so it's difficult to drive. but i love the rain and we really need it. it's been so dry down here there have been a lot of wild fires going on so this should quench them. it's not supposed to stop raining here until wednesday.

an amusing day

i woke up early this morning. about 7:30 which is early for me on a saturday. i decided to treat myself and the puppies to mcdonald's for breakfast. they were so excited to get to come in the car so i ordered them an extra breakfast burrito to split. after i fed them and ate i watched england play in their world cup game and did a few things online. around 10am my friend called me. there is something that i have been worried about so i guess she was thinking about me and my issue. she called to tell me her revalation. she is so cute. she cheered me up so much. not that i was down, but being cheered up just when you're normal is even better! so that set the tone for my day.

i watched a bit of tv and two other world cup games. i caught a nap in between games. i was making a new playlist on itunes. i always get sucked into that. i bought a few new songs too. they finally got the shakira song out! anyways, i wandered over into the collection of music they offer for children to see what they had. of course barney and the wiggles and stuff. but they had a few collections that were songs kids would like but parents can tolerate. mostly old 50s or 60s stuff like yakety yak, the purple people eater, the bird, stuff like that. charlie was on his pearch in the computer room while i was sampling the songs. he went crazy for all of those. it was so damn funny. usually he'll dance and sing if i start it. but with these songs, they just must have pleased his ears so much that he went at it on his own. he was making all sorts of noises i've never heard trying to sing along. he was singing to and playing with his toys, hanging upside down, rolling over on his back, bouncing his head, flapping his wings . . . i was having so fun watching him we kept at that for about a half an hour.

it started to rain this afternoon. finally the rainy season is starting down here so we can expect really heavy rain for at least a half an hour each afternoon. i sat opened up the sliding doors so i could hear and smell it. i sat outside for a bit on the lanai. i had charlie on my shoulder.i decided to put him out in the rain to see what he'd do. i put him down on the grass, just a few inches from the edge of the lanai where he could walk to and be dry. but he loved it. it was funny to see him standing in the grass. the grass came halfway up his body. he hung out for about 2-3 minutes and then decided he had enough. he was soaked. but his native habitat is in the rain forest so i'm sure it felt good for him. anyways, he looked so goofy as he was drying off. somehow his top feather got into a mohawk. so he'd be sitting there talking away making parrot noises and i'd look at him and just bust out as he'd ask me what i'm doing. meanwhile, taylor is terrified of thunder storms so she was shaking and hiding. and i think tristen was jealous from the attention i was paying to charlie so he found a new spot and decided to hang out up on the arm of the sofa, right above my head.

as if there wasn't enough sports excitment with the world cup games today (the argentina team kicks ass), the belmont stakes were on to. i love horse racing and usually watch all three triple crown races each year. poor barbaro got hurt before the preakness and he was top story during the race. they showed him in his stall. he was wearing a blanket singed by all sorts of people (like humans would have their cast signed) and his stall was decorated with all sorts of cards and pictures made by kids. during race time they wheeled in a tv so barbaro could watch. what a hoot. do horses watch tv?

after all that excitement for the day i made dinner and watched capote. capote was awesome and i wathed the featurettes too. now i'm deciding on another movie or finishing a scrapbook project i'm working on. oh, the joys of having nothing to do.

gay marriage

Main Entry: marriage
Pronunciation: 'mer-ij, 'ma-rij
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English mariage, from Anglo-French, from marier to marry
1 a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage b : the mutual relation of married persons : WEDLOCK c : the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage
2 : an act of marrying or the rite by which the married status is effected; especially : the wedding ceremony and attendant festivities or formalities
3 : an intimate or close union

this whole gay marriage vote thing is totally pissing me off. i am really bothered by it. first of all, we are at war. hello . . . why all of a sudden do we want to try and amend the constitution. shouldn't we be focusing on other things? second of all, hearing all the politicans defination of marriage is insulting. then today i read that the vote from the senate came back 48-49. it really infuriated me is when i saw those numbers. it scares the shit out of me that half the senators in our country want to vote to FEDERALLY prohibit gay marriage. and the higher number, 49 of them voted yes! i just can't believe it. If this wasn't doing someting so big as amending the constituion, it would have passed. But they needed 60 votes to win. I am amazed. What the hell have I been missing? I feel this has kind of come out of no where. if some reason it actually needs to be governed, it should definately be a state issue.

being a human rights advocate, i am pro-gay marriage. i have gay friends and fully support them being able to live the same happy and healthy life i do. and come on, in know this is a generalization, but how many gay people are actually a detriment to society? they are the complete opposite. typically making a good leaving and living a traditionally middle class nice lifestyle. good jobs, pay taxes, stimulate the economy by spending their money. they are actually the most ideal type of all stereotypes except they have sex with people of the same sex. we live in fucking america for christ's sake. we have schools with tons of children that don't even speak english, our native language. we have so many different walks of life and they all get a chance to be free. i had a gay friend attend my wedding and i remember thinking at the time that it's sad that he'll never be able to celebrate a union like this.

for both single and gay people marriage means different things. for some it's the ultimate commitment and for others it's just a contract or making something legal. but the tax benefits and insurance benefits and adoption and all that are important for most couples. and all couples should be treated equally. we don't discriminate for couples of mixed races of if there is a sick person or any other discriminatory factor except for being gay. that is so ridiculous. hell, in some states men can have more than one wife. what's up with that shit???

i'm going to go throw up now. i feel defeated and ashamed to live in this country when shit like this goes on.

Jon Stewart tears open Bill Bennett on gay marriage

Jon Steward made mincemeat of out neanderthal pundit Bill Bennett in a debate on gay marriage; Crooks and Liars has the video:

Bennett: Well I think if gay..gay people are already members of families...

Stewart: What? (almost spitting out his drink)

Bennett: They're sons and they're daughters..

Stewart: So that's where the buck stops, that's the gay ceiling.

Bennett Look, it's a debate about whether you think marriage is between a man and a women.

Stewart:I disagree, I think it's a debate about whether you think gay people are part of the human condition or just a random fetish.

confessions of a foodie

i have been addicted to watching cooking shows the past few days. i haven't cooked in forever. i mean really cooked - like a big meal with new recipes. i used to do it all the time. on friday i saw some recipes i wanted to make so i bought all the fixins. i always see something that looks good and don't realize how expensive the meat is. this time i spent over $20 just on the meat. i was planning on cooking it up yesterday but ran out time. so i spent my afternoon today cooking. i made Chinese Braised Short Ribs, Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and Edamame in Kung Pao Sauce. the meal feeds 8 people but i am the only one here. didn't feel like inviting anyone over. so i'll have TONS of leftovers. the dogs got some of the meat and charlie got the edamame and potatoes. it turned out awesome and we are all happily full!

pancakes and blueberry sausage

yup, the blueberries are in the sausage, not the pancakes. i was at Sweetbay yesterday and they had it as a sample. they were so good i had to buy some. then i thought i better get some pancakes to do with it. so i had a big breakfast this morning. the challenge was, i don't know how to cook sausage or pancakes. i always let the man in my life cook those. somehow, guys always know how to cook pancakes and sausages. so i never bothered to learn. i've been intimidated for years. but today, i went for it. i gave the lumpy pancakes to the dogs and bird. charlie bird really like the pancakes. the dogs like the sausage better.

typical saturday

yesterday was a typical saturday. i was going to cook a big dinner but i waited too long to get it going so that is what i am going to do tonight. i did lots of stuff around the house and spent alot of time on the computer. i was running the numbers and different options about me selling the house to move. as you can see from the pictures, taylor and tristen are getting closer and even cuddling a bit. i burned my arm the other day and it is finally starting to heal. charlie was of course into everything and hanging out with me all day as well.
