Memories of E-Bow the Letter

Just thinking about this today . . . I remember watching the Tibetan Freedom Concert online back when we still used dial up to get online. It was 1998 and I was living in a two-bedroom in Lakeview. Even with the shitty video quality from 56K, this performance of Thom Yorke's supplementing REM's Michael Stipe was incredibly haunting and absolutely amazing. I had to go out an buy R.E.M.'s album just for this song.

Side Order of Life

I've been watching the new series Side Order of Life on Lifetime. It's part of their new Sunday night lineup. I'm a sucker hour-long tv shows about independent women. This one reminds of an Ally McBeal for this decade. She imagines things like talking babies and elephants in the bathtup. Instead of a lawyer the show revolves around a press photographer. And she's engaged and re-thinking if she should go through with her wedding. I'm two episodes in and most people will think it is corny, but I am enjoying it quite a bit! It's like a mini-lifetime movie which I can watch in 40 minutes (thanks to TIVO) and it keeps going week after week.

The best part though is the mystery phone guy. She dialed a wrong phone number one day why trying to call her fiance and ended up talking to some mystery guy. For some reason they keep talking over and over. I think it's going to end up being her cute editor at work. I hoping for a "You've Got Mail" type of think. Too delicious! Oh, and Brandon from Beverly Hills 90210 is in in too :)

The Hair Olympics

I'm watching a documentary on PBS called Hairworld: The Pursuit of Excellence and it's tripping me out a bit. Hairworld is the "Hair Olympics" and an annual worldwide event. Who know such a thing existed! I saw Blow Dry, the movie with Alan Rickman, but I didn't realize it was a real thing and how serious these people take it. Far be it from me to talk because I get obsessed with whatever I'm into.

In Moscow, 300 stylists from more than 40 countries compete at the International HairWorld Championships for medals in timed tests of hairstyling skill. This program follows Team USA as they embark on months of rigorous training until finally their dreams unfold, hair by hair, on the competition floor.

It was kind of neat to watch because it is just another artform that I was not familiar with. It will be in Chicago in 2008, maybe I'll check it out in person.

Kathy Griffin and Ricky Gervais

My friend Kia introduced me to Ricky Gervais. I am totally obsessed with him now. I watched two seasons and the special of the British version of The Office. I've also watched two seasons of Extras. He is fucking genius.

Ironically, I introduced to Kathy Griffin and her show My Life on the D List. How ironic is it that Kathy hooked up with Ricky Gervais while she was in the UK. And their little meeting was shown on one of the episodes that I just watched tonight.

The Concert for Diana

I know the Concert for Diana aired about a week ago. I think it was when I was on vacation in Chicago. But I just got around to watching it today. 6 hours is a long time, but I watched it while I worked. I fast-forwarded through alot of performances but as the show went on I fast-forwarded less and less.

I absolutely LOVED the Andrew Lloyd Webber tribute. I guess Diana loved the arts - especially dancing and singing and the part of musicals. There were songs from Jesus Christ Superstar (the only one I did not see), Memory from Cats, Music of the Night and All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera and Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The Joseph performance might have been my favorite because I actually saw Donnie Osmond star in that one and I love that soundtrack.

Rod Stewart also had and amazing performance. I'm going to have to see him sometime.

By the way, I think Prince Harry finally has become more handsome than Prince William. They are two hotties!

The Police Concert at Wrigley Field

Tiffany and I went to see The Police concert tonight. When I heard they would be playing at Wrigley Field I knew I had to go. I flew in over the 4th of July holiday just to go to this concert.

They opened with Message in a Bottle which was a great song to get us in the mood. We didn't know about a quarter of the songs! And they totally butchered Roxanne and Don't Stand So Close to Me. But Synchronicity II, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic were definitely worth the price of admission! And singing Every Breath You Take with 100,000 other people all at once was simply amazing.
